The Pink Panther is one of the most extraordinary characters of our time, and one of the longest and funniest film series, one of the most beautiful cartoon icons and features one of the most memorable melodies ever composed. Everyone knows him: he mesmerizes children, intrigues adults, he is both funny and serious, absurd and ordinary, tacky, but with style; he represents the glitzy glow of wealth and obsession with material things, the dirty glow of dirty money, the glow of the “more and more…” that turns people in predators and magpies. The criminal and the police are two sides of the same coin: human greed, insatiability and immorality. The Pink Panther is a character – an allegory that always
and absolutely escapes that kind of sick ambition and suggests its defeat. On the other hand, inspector Clouseau, a policeman whose incapability borders stupidity, is the only person capable of dealing with criminals, being honest and benevolent. His catastrophic and hilarious actions are governed by a major force (deus ex machina), and that enhances our belief that ethics (goodness) must precede each human skill, activity and knowledge. It does not matter if this force is God, optimism, humour, absurdity, destiny, luck or righteousness. What matters is that we believe in it.
